Take care of the admin

Admin might be boring, but it’s an essential part of making sure that everything goes to plan! You’ll need to ensure that you have the bank details of your new staff member, plus contact details of their next of kin should there be an emergency in the workplace. Get this sorted on the first day that they arrive, to avoid any problems further down the line.

Have a clear induction process for every new recruit

Even if you don’t regularly bring in new staff, it’s worthwhile having a clear induction process in place that covers everything they will need to know, right down to the small details such as where they can make a cup of tea and where the toilets are. The induction should follow the same format whether you’re offering receptionist jobs in Liverpool or scientist jobs in Edinburgh.

Consider assigning new staff a buddy

A buddy is a great way to ensure that new staff have an informal point of contact within the business that they can turn to with any questions or queries. It can help with social integration, as well as the smooth running of day-to-day activities. Advertise the buddy scheme and ask willing members of staff to nominate themselves to help out.

Outline performance metrics from the start

It’s a good idea to come to a mutual understanding from the very first day around what you want your new recruit to achieve. This will prevent any problems further down the line that have simply been caused by miscommunication.

Have an open door policy

Many issues in the workplace can be avoided by ensuring that you staff know that they can talk to you in the case of any problems. An open door policy shows that you care about the team and are happy to discuss and deal with any day-to-day happenings.

If you treat these points as your to-do list, you’ll be much better placed for success when it comes to your new recruits.
